STEAM IRONS - STEAM STATIONS - GARMENT STEAMERS BUYING GUIDE REVIEW

Steam Iron Buying guides Stan CashSteam stations and steam irons have different features and benefits. When reviewing your iron choices you need to consider their functionality and how that fits with your ironing needs. Considerations would be portability, different types of soleplates, how often you iron, how much you iron, the majority of what you iron.

Technology in irons has changed in recent years. Ironing is not many peoples’ favourite job, but some of the advances, like cordless irons, might just make that job a little less boring.

IRONS

• The greatest advantage with steam irons is obviously their portability.
• The better the wattage the more powerful the iron, it will get your creases out quicker, less time spent at the ironing board.
• One of the best features of the steam irons is the choice of settings so if you have a typical household ironing regime it would probably include cotton, silk, and nylon. These settings are very user friendly and increases the functionality of your iron. It also minimises garment damage.
• A steam iron is generally light weight so no added back pressure.

Soleplates

• Aluminum -Transports heat in an efficient manner, may get damaged on harsh buttons or fittings, sometimes challenging to clean
• Non–stick - Very good maneuverability, easily damaged
• Stainless steel - Glides well more durable than other options
• Palladium- Has advantages over aluminium for maneuverability but not durable
• Ceramic- Ticks all the boxes, glides well, easy to maintain and long lasting

STEAM IRON STATION

One of the steam stations’ greatest advantages is their pressure and wattage. They generally generate twice as much steam as a portable iron. Imagine how you might iron a doona cover. With a steam iron you iron it square by square on the ironing board. With a steam station you can fold it in half and still get all the creases out because you have more heat and steam power. It will significantly cut down your ironing time.

Steam stations are heavier than traditional steam irons, but only the base, then iron itself generally not. So it’s a little heavier to pull out of it’s storage spot. Generally most people iron in the same place so unless you need an iron that has to travel, the increases weight of a steam station is generally not an issue. Steam station have a greater water capacity than normal irons so generally only need filling once.

GARMENT STEAMERS

Garment steamers are a great, efficient alternative to a traditional iron. However, you will only be able to iron delicate items, such as shirts, trousers and some curtains. Materials suitable for a garment steamer would be silk, nylon, linen and satin. You cannot iron a doona cover with a garment steamer. If this is the iron you wish to purchase just be aware of the length of the hose, make sure it’s not too short.

Some have a manual function but ask the salesperson what descaling your iron requires as they will also sell descaling solution if that is what your iron requires. Secondly purchase a good ironing board with a good ironing board cover. A good ironing board will glide up and down easily without putting too much stress on your back. A good ironing board cover will help your iron glide, getting the creases out of your clothes quicker and not create new ones it the garment is placed on the ironing board skew whiff.
